Environment and Climate Change Canada: Post-Doctoral Positions in Toronto, Ontario, Canada The Atmospheric Processes, Emissions, and Composition Section of ECCC invites applications for Post-Doctoral Fellowship positions, for a one-year term with the possibility of renewal for up to 2 additional years upon mutual agreement. A pool of candidates will be established to fill multiple postdoctoral positions. Candidates will have the opportunity to participate in field and laboratory-based studies related to the quantification of gas- and particle-phase organic carbon from both wildfires (via an airborne study) and the oil and gas sector in separate projects. This will include aspects associated with the evolution of organic carbon via the formation of oxidized products, including Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA), and other semi- and intermediate volatility (SVOC/IVOC) organics. Additional aspects of the research will include developing new methods for quantifying intermediate and semi-volatile organic carbon species, method development for wildfire PM speciation, airborne measurements of trace gases, and the relationship between PM composition and health and environmental impacts. The work will be predominantly based upon a focused airborne wildfire campaign and/or ground-based studies in oil and gas regions. The research will involve the use of advanced real-time gas and aerosol instrumentation (HR-ToF-AMS, HR-ToF-CIMS, HR-ToF-PTR-MS, SMPS, GC-EI-ToF-MS, etc ), as well as off-line gas chromatography (GC-MS), thermal desorption methods coupled to gas chromatography (TD-GC-MS) and liquid chromatography (LC-ToF-MS). • A Ph.D. in chemistry, atmospheric sciences, environmental engineering, or a related discipline is required. • Must be able to travel for field work within Canada for up to 6-8 weeks per year and have experience in planning and conducting scientific field and/or laboratory measurement projects. • Experience with technical aspects of gas-chromatography, liquid-chromatography, and chromatographic method development is highly desirable. • Demonstrated experience in the collection, preparation, and extraction of ambient air samples using filter- and sorbent cartridge-based sampling methods is highly desirable. • Experience in the operations of advanced real-time gas and aerosol mass spectrometry techniques (Chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CIMS) including HR-ToF-PTR-MS, and Aerosol mass spectrometry (AMS)) and supporting instrumentation (i.e., SMPS) are highly desirable. • Demonstrated ability in computer programming, (e.g., Igor, Matlab, Python etc.), and/or complex data analysis (e.g., PMF, source-receptor modeling, dispersion/inverse modeling, machine learning) is also highly desirable.
