Job Description:
MATS Winter 2027 is a fully funded, 12-week fellowship running January 19 to April 10, 2027. The Biosecurity track supports research and field-building aimed at reducing catastrophic biological risk in a world reshaped by advanced AI. Current projects with researchers from organizations including LILA, SecureBio, Fourth Eon Biosecurity, and Active Site span: → Dangerous scientific-capability evaluations, monitoring, and safeguards → Empirical studies of AI-enabled biological uplift and AI-directed lab automation → Function-based DNA synthesis screening and biological foundation models → Physical defenses against engineered pathogens, including PPE, filtration, bioshelters, and resilient supply chains → Resilient therapeutics, detection, and other biological countermeasures → AI-bio forecasting, threat modeling, and governance To support this work, fellows receive a $6,400/month stipend and up to $8,000/month compute/research budget for non-technical participants or $16,000/month for technical participants, with housing, meals, and travel covered. The program is primarily based in Berkeley and London, with remote participation possible depending on mentor preferences, and J-1 visa support if needed. Fellows can also apply to continue through a funded 6-12 month extension; over 80% of fellows who apply secure one.
