Job Title: Urban contributions to global climate mitigation Post-doctoral Research Associate
Job Description:
The Data-Driven EnviroLab (DDL) at the UNC Institute for the Environment is seeking a highly motivated and qualified Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a multidisciplinary team investigating the role of cities in global climate mitigation. This position will support a cutting-edge research initiative that integrates satellite remote sensing, Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs), and large-scale geospatial data to assess and model urban mitigation strategies and their alignment with international climate goals. The successful candidate will lead the development of geospatial models and analytical workflows to quantify and track emissions across cities worldwide. This includes linking Earth observation data with IAMs and scenario modeling to evaluate the impact of urban policies and infrastructure decisions. The postdoc will work closely with a team of environmental scientists, geographers, modelers, and policy researchers. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to impactful, policy-relevant science at the intersection of climate change, urbanization, and data science. Required Qualifications: - Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Science, Climate Science, Earth System Science, Geoinformatics, GIS, Urban Planning, or a closely related field - Demonstrated experience with satellite remote sensing (e.g., MODIS, Landsat, Sentinel), preferably using Google Earth Engine - Proficiency in Python, R, or JavaScript for geospatial analysis and modeling - Familiarity with machine learning, spatial statistics, and time-series analysis a plus - Experience working with large-scale Earth observation data in cloud or HPC environments - Background in urban systems, urban emissions modeling, or climate policy evaluation highly desiredDate of Posting | 07/23/2025 |
