AAAR 39th Annual Conference

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the conference organizers, I am excited to welcome you to the 39th AAAR Annual Conference, to be held October 18-22 at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The AAAR Conference is the premiere venue for sharing our latest research progress in aerosol science and technology in the United States, while networking and re-connecting with colleagues in industry, government, and academia.

At present, we are planning for an in-person conference, but will also be prepared to switch to a virtual conference if required. The 2021 Conference will feature a full slate of tutorials on Monday covering a wide range of aerosol science topics including the popular "Hands-on Aerosol Instrumentation Design and Measurement" tutorial. This year, we are also planning some changes to the traditional AAAR conference schedule:

  1. We are adding an opening plenary session Monday evening. Please do plan on arriving to Albuquerque Monday mid-day to attend this opening session. The 2021 AAAR conference will have 5 plenary speakers.
  2. We are moving the Friday plenary session to be a closing plenary session Thursday evening. At the suggestion of multiple members, Friday, October 22 will be specifically reserved for committee meetings, and the technical content of the conference will be scheduled from Monday evening, October 18, through Thursday evening, October 21.

Plenary sessions will be held Monday evening, Tuesday morning, Wednesday morning, Thursday morning, and Thursday evening. The technical program will feature parallel platform and poster sessions with several scheduled breaks for informal exchange Tuesday-Thursday. The exhibit area, open Tuesday through Thursday, will provide opportunities to engage with and learn from leading companies offering instrumentation and services in aerosol science and technology.

We will have four symposia designed to bridge multiple areas and promote cross-disciplinary interaction on the following topics:

  1. Infectious Aerosols in the Age of COVID-19 (Chairs: Paul Dabisch, Gedi Mainelis, & Shanna Ratnesar-Shummate)
  2. Wildfire Aerosols (Chairs: Amara Holder, Yongho Kim, & Jeff Pierce)
  3. Standards for Aerosol Measurement (Chairs: Jimmy Radney & Chris Zangmeister)
  4. Translating aerosol research for societal impact: Science communication and public outreach (Chairs: Andy Grieshop, Rachel O'Brien, & Marina Vance)

The 2021 Conference will be held at the Albuquerque Convention Center. Mean daily high temperatures in October are ~72° F. The convention center is situated in downtown Albuquerque, and the conference hotels are both situated <1 block from the convention center, as are a variety of restaurants.  Reservations for AAAR reserved room blocks will available through the hotels link under the Travel section of this site.

Following from previous years, we will continue the “Meet the Job Seekers” poster session, and we are tentatively planning for a “Meet the Program Managers,” session. You can sign up for these events when registering for the conference.

Finally, please be on the lookout for updates regarding the conference format; as you are no doubt aware the ability to hold an in-person conference is an evolving situation, and we will do our best to give as much advance notice as we can on the conference format. We look forward to welcoming you in Albuquerque in October at the 39th Annual Conference of the American Association for Aerosol Research!
