Job Title: Graduate Student Researcher

Job Description:

The University of California Riverside, Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department is hiring a Ph.D. student to support experimental research in the field of non-exhaust emissions measurement and chemical characterization from mobile sources. The ideal candidate will hold a degree in Mechanical, Environmental, or Chemical engineering, and will have experience in the fields of air quality and combustion. The ideal candidate will also have laboratory experience as an undergraduate with knowledge in operating real-time particle equipment and/or experience in chromatographic techniques. A valid US driving license is mandatory. The Ph.D. candidate will conduct laboratory and field measurement campaigns to collect data on both brake-wear and tire-wear emissions from different types of vehicles. The candidate is expected to: (1) design sampling systems to be installed on vehicles for in-use testing and having a good knowledge on Solidworks design software; (2) design the experimental setup to collect in-use emissions from vehicles, including PM2.5, PM10, particle number, and particle size distributions; (3) analyze and verify data throughout the data collection, and troubleshoot issues with equipment; (4) perform chemical analysis using chromatographic techniques and qualitative analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) couples with EDX detectors; and (5) perform comprehensive data analysis using statistical models and writing papers. The Ph.D. candidate will be supervised by Professor Georgios Karavalakis who is the director of the Sustainable Mobility and Environmental Laboratory. The candidate will primarily work at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), and will have the opportunity to closely work with a diverse team of graduate student and research faculty with various ongoing projects.
